![]() ![]() But that figure may be low relative to costs for future sections of the wall. Trump is also pushing border taxes more broadly against trading partners, which could help finance the wall.Īccording to a Government Accountability Office 2009 report, the cost to build 1 mile of fencing at the border averaged between $2.8 million and $3.9 million. On the campaign trail Trump's immigration reform plan called for impounding remittance payments derived from illegal wages, a controversial idea, and imposing increased visa and entry fees to the United States from Mexico unless the latter agrees to finance the wall. Customs and Border Protection, at a Senate Committee hearing in May 2015. "It's a lot more expensive than we expected when we started, and it was much more difficult," said Ronald Vitiello, deputy chief of border patrol for the U.S. Even before the fence reached its first stage of completion, some argued it was not being constructed properly. The Secure Fence Act called for 700 miles of fencing, with a double layer throughout, but much of the barrier isn't reinforced this way. That alone cost about $2.4 billion, for roughly one-third of the entire border and, according to migration experts, some of the easier and less costly areas to fence. About 670 miles of fencing on the U.S.–Mexico border was completed in accordance with the Bush administration's Secure Fence Act of 2006. ![]() It is a massive stretch of land - the Berlin Wall spanned just 96 miles comparatively, and it cost about $25 million to build in 1961, or around $200 million with inflation.īuilding a wall to keep out illegal immigrants is not a novel plan. ![]() border with Mexico is roughly 2,000 miles long and underlines four states, from California to Texas, more than half of it along the Colorado River and Rio Grande. ![]() ![]() The d-pad offers quick use of consumables, which is welcome given the game's fast-paced, often unforgiving duels. LT blocks and parries, RT casts magical "signs," LB brings up the quick access menu and RB uses quickslot items. The Xbox One default setting has two face buttons for fast and strong attacks, and another for dodges. The tutorial establishes combat that should be familiar to The Witcher 2 players initially. Soon enough, I'm on the hunt for a daunting-looking wraith that's been haunting a nearby well. All these things take place in a relatively safe environment, not entirely."Ī notice board points to many of the available side quests, but it's easy enough to just wander the paths and find villagers bearing yellow exclamation marks. You can go dive in the river and underneath the bridge you might find some loot. "Meaning that, you also get introduced to how it is and how it feels exploring the world, right? We have a small cave there, there is also some loot, some interesting stuff there. "We treat the prologue area, actually, as a whole as an introductory area, not only to the gameplay mechanics but also as to how the game world works," Level Designer Miles Tost tells me after in a roundtable interview. Either way, the path leads to the village tavern and some answers, but mostly a whole host of side quests. Returning Witcher players will nod their heads at options to accept coin for the rescue and to let the merchant know who Geralt's looking for. Sadly, no fighting just yet in a cut scene the huge ugly duckling of a beast flies off with the mare in its claws, and its claw marks in Vesemir's shoulder. I immediately encounter my first griffin, feasting on a merchant's horse. We also know Ciri is on the run from the titular Wild Hunt, "a cavalcade of ghastly riders capable of unspeakable destruction."Īfter the tutorial, the approach to the prologue village gets into the meat of things quickly. In the present, it's Yennefer that Vesemir and Geralt are trying to track down, but we know Geralt will later be searching for Ciri too. According to Geralt it isn't a memory, as he can't recall Yennefer being at Kaer Morhen. He turns to his companion, the mentor witcher Vesemir, and tells him of the nightmare. It's here Geralt wakes up, back in the present day and in the much less lush surroundings of a forest campfire. ![]() Then, as is the tendency of dreams, things turn sour quick. The witcher's young stead is as able as she is impetuous, and it's clear how much Geralt values her training. Here she's just a silver-haired child - not the woman pictured in last month's reveal - yet she's training to learn the same skills and talents as Geralt, who seems to be in charge of her care. If you don't want to delve into the literature, her starring role in the game's tutorial is fairly revealing. To recap, last month CD Projekt revealed Ciri as a new, at-times playable character for the gaming series (Geralt remains The Witcher 3's main protagonist), but to readers of the Witcher books she's far from a new name. The tutorial begins shortly after, but it's the immediate unveiling of Ciri that catches the eye. Given the dark, unclear end to The Witcher 2, it's an eerily sedate, frankly pleasant beginning, albeit with a familiarly flirty undercurrent. A younger Geralt, the series' white-haired, monster-hunting protagonist, is enjoying a bath in the witcher stronghold of Kaer Morhen, and in the company of Yennefer, his beautiful sorceress flame and owner of said posterior. But before all that, let's return to those buttocks.Įchoing the flashback that preludes the previous entry, The Witcher 3 begins with a dream. There's the impulse to call my horse and gallop towards the horizon, but I find the village's multitude of side quests as welcoming as they are distracting, and certainly meaty enough to steer me away from temptation.Įventually I drag myself to the main quest and my first wild hunt of The Witcher 3, as I track and take on a huge, bloodthirsty griffin. It's a small riverside muddle of hovels, taverns and fields, its warm hues belying the deeper, darker stories within. Yet, following a story-driven tutorial, I end up losing myself to the very first landmark, the peasant village of White Orchard. The third entry in CD Projekt's fantasy RPG series may offer a new open world that's umpteen times bigger than previous entries. There's an immediate intimacy to my first three or so hours with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and no, I don't mean the bare buttocks I see in one of the opening cut scenes. ![]() ![]() ![]() Wattpad categorizes all works by their respective genre, and each genre has its own “Hot” list ranking all that genre’s stories by their current level of readership. So, to get noticed, my early strategy was to look for stories that were already immensely popular. It’s a virtual avalanche of fiction, and most who venture there are buried from the start. As I write this, there are over 200 million independent story uploads on the site, every genre you can think of, with thousands more uploading every day. Here’s how it was done, and how you might do the same… A Leaf in the Wattpad Forest: How to Get Noticedįor those using Wattpad for the first time, the initial steps are simple: sign up and create a profile, write some text (or, in my case, paste some text already written), click a button that says “Publish”, and presto - an audience of 45 million instantly have access to your story. ![]() Within months I’d gone from absolute obscurity to winning a Wattys “Hidden Gems” award and attracting over 40,000 reads. I wanted to get some eyeballs on my novel in order to find out what the global public thought of my ability to tell a story. The latter seemed like a good place to start. In the years that followed I wrote my novel Oakwood Grange, my first, basically a stewpot of strange fantasy and Western grit - a Coraline meets Little House on the Prairie kind of tale, and when I finished it I recalled that old tour bus conversation and the website Wattpad. Paths are not always as clear-cut as they first appear. That’s what authors did if they wanted to go pro. To me, as far as writing was concerned, the well-trodden path was still the best to follow (albeit steeply uphill and exhausting): first, you finish the manuscript, then you query agents and get published. I had no idea what he was talking about, for back then it had not occurred to me to “post” my writing anywhere at all. “It’s this website where you post your stories and people read them and leave comments,” he explained. Taran was in his early twenties at the time, traveling for adventure, as I was, and typing something on a laptop that - little did we know - within months would snowball several million online readers and earn him a top-tier agent, a six-figure advance from a major publisher, and a position on the New York Times Best Sellers list. Three years ago I met a dude named Taran Matharu who asked me this while we were riding in a tour bus up the coast of northeastern Australia. Here he shares some tidbits about how that success came to be, how other authors might do the same and get noticed on Wattpad. The story also earned him a “Featured” spot on the website’s homepage for a monthly audience of 45 million, and later ranked in the top 40 of the Fantasy genre (top 40 of over 200 million stories). ![]() ![]() Is it supposed to work this way? I feel like I'm missing something. I'm also baffled by how the configurations work, are changes saved automatically? It seems like I have to create a new config for every little change - no modifying existing configs since if I export a config it will always create a new one. Whatever I configure in the game shortcut controller settings is ignored, only the "global" config is actually used by the game. Problem 2 - Only the Desktop configuration seems to work. If I press the WASD keys on the keyboard I don't get this problem. This makes the game unplayable basically. If I map some of the steam controller buttons to joypad buttons this effect seems to get worse, just moving forward is "stuttery". Releasing the stick usually makes me become "unstuck". Problem 1 - I can only get the left stick to work for movement when it is mapped as buttons WASD, shouldn't it work as a joystick as well? A normal XBox controller works fine, I assume that it outputs an analog joystick for the left stick? The major problem here is that button presses seems to get lost somehow, resulting in me getting "stuck" when moving in the game. I start battlefield 4 from big picture mode.
